How do I join Scripps Mock Trial?
Our season starts every year at the beginning of September. Come to the CLORGS Fair, or look for our signs around campus to find details about information sessions that the team will be holding. Also, feel free to contact us if you have any specific questions or if you're interested in being added to our mailing list.
What if I didn't do mock trial in high school?
All skill levels are welcome on our team. There is no need for you to have previously done mock trial, or any other public speaking club, in order to join. The majority of our team did not participate in mock trial during high school, so we spend the fall semester focused on teaching weekly classes to help bring everyone up to speed.
What is it like to be on Scripps Mock Trial ?
During the fall semester the team focuses on teaching new members the procedures of mock trial, and returning members of the team are integral to this process. Through weekly classes new members will quickly learn what they need to know to start competing at a high level against some of the best competitors in the country. We compete at tournaments across the west coast from September-March.
Second semester the team breaks up into two teams that vary in their level of competitiveness which allows members more flexibility in how much time they dedicate towards the team. While we do compete in tournaments during the fall, these tournaments are solely for practice and have no ramifications on our national rankings or ability to compete in future tournaments. In the spring the tournaments are hosted by the American Mock Trial Association, and success at these events allows the team to move on to compete at higher levels of competition.
Who does Scripps Mock Trial?
We are not all future lawyers! This is a big misconception about the team, and mock trial in general, because the vast majority of members are not pre-law. The benefits from joining mock trial will be applicable on any walk of life. Our team is full of people with a variety of academic interests, ranging from the humanities to the hard sciences. Our members are also highly involved with many other clubs on campus. While some members did join the team to try their hand at law, some came to improve their public speaking skills, others to further their improvisational skills, and many for the competitive environment. In the end everyone is in it for the team.
